How to set up your Google+ Custom URL
Google+ has recently expanded the capability for regular users to create a custom URL for their profile. Custom URLs (also known as vanity URLs) are a great feature that make it significantly easier to remember and locate a particular webpage or social media profile.
Previously, the ability to create custom URLs in Google+ was only available to selected companies, well-known brands and celebrities. While there are still some minimum criteria before Google will preapprove your custom URL, most users should now be eligible.
Creating a custom URL for your Google+ profile has many benefits in regard to branding, marketing, and Search Engine Optimization. This is especially the case for businesses and organizations looking to improve their online presence.
As a result we have created a step by step guide for setting up a custom URL for your Google+ profile:
Step 1: – Check if you have been preapproved
i. Go to your Google+ page.
ii. If you are eligible for a custom URL a notification bar will be visible with the message “Your page is preapproved for the custom URL”.
In our case, the preapproved custom URL ‘google.com/+Zeusdb’ also appeared in the notification message. However, in some instances it will not be visible at this stage.
iii. Click “Get URL”.
Please Note: If you do not see the notification bar with the message for preapproval first check the link above to ensure you meet the minimum criteria Google has specified. If you meet the minimum requirements then please wait a few more days and try again.
Step 2: – Change existing URL to new custom URL
i. A box will appear showing your Google+ page’s existing URL and the custom URL you can change it to.
Google will automatically choose your custom URL that it has preapproved.
It is not case sensitive so +Zeusdb is the same as +zeusdb and +ZeusDB. They will all redirect to the same profile page whichever one is typed.
Important: Although you can change the case of your custom URL text (in the About settings) at a later time you cannot change the custom URL name Google has preapproved. For example, if we wanted +ZeusOnlinedb we would not be able to change it. If you are unhappy with what Google has preapproved do not change it at this stage.
Additional Step: Some users are also given an option at this stage to add a few letters or numbers to ensure that their custom URL is unique.
ii. Check the “I agree to the Terms of Service” tick box and click the “Change URL” button.
Step 3: – Confirm custom URL for your page
Finally, you must confirm that you want to change your page’s URL to your new custom URL. If you are unsure about any step in this process or how your custom URL looks please do not hit ‘Confirm’ at this stage. Instead, either contact us or post a comment at the end of this blog and we will be happy to reply.
i. If you are happy with your new custom URL click “Confirm choice” for the change to occur permanently.
You should receive a Congratulations message that confirms you have claimed your custom URL.
That’s all there is to it!
